In our Partner’s words – Health New Zealand
Founding partner, Health New Zealand
“Our high functioning health precinct is a result of our strong enduring vision that ensures the collective hopes, dreams and aspirations of all of our institutions are brought to life for the betterment of our community. Within Te Papa Hauora we are known for our strong partnerships, our embracing of research, technology and innovation (including medtech), and our focus on engaging with our community to build their knowledge and understanding on current health matters.
One of the things I am most proud of is our Future Leaders programme with students from a range of disciplines gaining knowledge about our health system, the key drivers as well as the current health system reforms. They are key to shaping our future, our upcoming designers, disrupters and innovators and we look forward to watching their leadership development pathway in the years ahead.”
Becky Hickmott is the Chief Nurse at Health NZ Te Whatu Ora Canterbury/Waitaha & West Coast/Te Tai o Poutini and is its representative on Te Papa Hauora Advisory Council.
Key partnership
The Canterbury health system is the second largest and one of fastest growing districts in the country.
It is responsible for the health of an estimated 594,320 people and is part of the larger national Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora health system. It operates five major hospitals and provides both regional and national specialty services.
It has extensive responsibilities for workforce development, training and professional development across a range of registered health professional groups and other health workers. This includes providing students from a variety of tertiary education providers including the University of Otago, Ara Institute of Canterbury and the University of Canterbury with educational opportunities in clinical settings.
Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury’s participation in Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct includes co-locating its researchers, educators and health staff with students and staff from Ara and the University of Canterbury in the Manawa building situated within the health precinct, which is across the road from Christchurch Hospital the South Island’s major tertiary centre.
