Newsletter August 2025

Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct proudly promotes health research, health education, and innovation in health, with the ultimate goal of improving community wellbeing.

Below are some of our upcoming events and recent highlights, but please visit our new website to learn more about what we’re up to and what’s happening at the Health Precinct!

WHAT’S HAPPENING

We’ve opened up more seats, so please join us for a Mayoral Candidate Forum at Manawa in the Health Precinct Monday 1 September, 5pm. Mayoral aspirants Sara Templeton and Phil Mauger will present their perspectives on the role of the City Council in promoting health and wellbeing across our community and why it matters. We will be exploring the City Council’s impact on health research, innovation and education within the city.

Te Papa Hauora together with the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation bring you another event in our series of free community research talks. Join us in Rangiora to learn more about heart health, brain health in relation to mood disorders, and exercise throughout the cancer journey from some of Canterbury’s leading researchers.

NEWS – RECENT HIGHLIGHTS

Congratulations to our 40 recent graduates from the 2025 Future Leaders Programme. This year we ran two week-long programmes for final year health students from our partner institutes. The programme was an excellent opportunity for students to explore their potential as leaders, with students from medicine, nursing, physio, health science, psychology and social work disciplines all taking part.

This year we had a record number of tertiary students from across Canterbury take part in our Future of Health Challenge run in partnership with the University of Canterbury’s Centre for Entrepreneurship. The challenge brought together over 80 health and non-health students to engage with real-life challenges within NZ’s health system and develop innovative solutions.

This year’s research talks featured some of the finest researchers in Canterbury who are improving healthcare for us all. We had eight incredible researchers share their work across a range of health topics on this night – there was something for everyone. If you missed it, view the videos on our website.
