George Abbott Symposium is back!

Great news, the annual George Abbott Symposium is back!

Date: Thursday 4 – Friday 5 September 2025
Time: 8:15am – 5:00pm (presentations starting from 8:45am)
Venue: Rolleston Theatre, University of Otago Christchurch, 2 Riccarton Avenue, Christchurch 

This year’s theme will be Acute Paediatrics: Care for children in need. 

We look forward to welcoming two key speakers to ÅŒtautahi Christchurch for the event. 

Associate Professor Mike Starr
Mike’s a General Paediatrician, Infectious Diseases Physician and Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne and Clinical Associate Professor at Melbourne University.   He chairs the national Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) Development Group.  He’s actively involved in APLS in Australia and the Asia Pacific and chairs the APLS International Programs Committee.

Professor Stuart Dalziel
Professor Dalziel is the Cure Kids Chair of Child Health Research. He is actively involved in the leadership of a number of international research networks which directly address important questions related to the acute care of children.
He is a Professor at the University of Auckland’s School of Medicine’s Departments of Surgery and Paediatrics, Director of Emergency Medicine Research and a Paediatric Emergency Medicine Specialist, Children’s Emergency Department, at Starship Children’s Hospital.
He is also the current chair of the Paediatric Research in Emergency Departments International Collaborative (PREDICT, Australasia’s paediatric emergency medicine research network) and Vice-Chair of the Paediatric Emergency Research Network (PERN), a collaboration of the six major international paediatric emergency medicine research networks.

Scientific Abstracts
We invite the submission of abstracts for presentation at the meeting. Please also encourage your trainees, students, or colleagues to present their work. Abstracts can focus on any aspect of paediatrics or child health. Those selected will be able to present their work as posters, which will be displayed throughout the meeting along with a dedicated poster presentation session. In addition, selected abstracts will be considered for oral presentation at the meeting. All presenters will be expected to register for and attend the symposium. Abstracts should be prepared in a standard fashion (Background, Aim, Methods, Results, Conclusions) within a maximum total of 250 words and submitted by email to Dr Angharad Hurley (angharad.hurley@otago.ac.nz) by 1700 hrs August 14th.
